How learning to code transforms Boyue's career

Our third Data Science Bootcamp is approaching. To ensure our students making best of the courses, the instructors have already started the prep week. We will also have our first part-time Data Science Bootcamp in August.

Before the program starts, we want to take a moment to look back at our first data science batch (batch 428)students graduated a year ago. Today we are delighted to interview Boyue, who right after graduating from the Data Science Bootcamp, landed a job as a product manager at a fintech company, and recently got an internal switch to the sales department. Let's hear Boyue's story of how he used the data and programming skills he learned at Le Wagon to benefit his work in the finance industry!

My name is Boyue. After I graduated with a Master degree in Investment from the UK at the end of 2018, I went back to China to do asset management in a securities company.   My work back then was to help High Net Worth Individuals to allocate and preserve the value of their assets, other than that, my team also provided clients who do quantitative investment with some financial technology products. During the period of working for this job, I had the opportunity to become familiar with quantitative investment, which is to allow machines to find certain patterns from a large amount of data and predict the rise and fall of stock prices through multi-factor models or neural network models.

Being a curious person who likes to think and explore the essence of things and the underlying logic, I was motivated by my work experience in securities to learn more about coding and data science. And I also realized that technology will be applied in many more industries in the future. With that in mind, when I learned about Le Wagon by chance, I was instantly attracted by the courses. I was also fascinated by its small class size with personal attention; frequent interaction between instructors and students; problem-solving oriented class design; learning through problem-solving instead of memorizing.

In the beginning, the fast-paced schedule was a bit unexpected. The course progressed very fast, which is a bit challengin for me who didn't have much of a programming background before. However, after I got used to it and quickly adjusted myself, the outcome exceeded my expectations. After the course, I acquired a framework understanding of programming and I could do some projects by myself.

I quickly got a few offers for several product manager jobs from finance companies because after graduation from the bootcamp, I was able to upskill and apply my programming skills on top of my finance knowledge. Eventually I decided to join "kingstar", a fintech company, to work as a product manager. The product I was working on was the FPGA speed trading system and FPGA market analysis system which I had been   interested in when I was at the security firm. After more than half a year in the Product Manager position, I just now get on a new journey in the sales department at the same company to provide services for trading institutions.

What I have benefited from Le Wagon Data Science bootcamp is that I was able to apply data analysis at my work as a product manager. First of all, our quotation system will receive thousands of strokes of data every second. As a product manager, I assisted the developers team to do some quantitative analysis and data manipulation. Secondly, it becomes easier for me to communicate with the developers team when you speak their "language". Last but not least, when the majority of my clients right now at my current job are working with high-frequency trading, my data knowledge helps me understand those clients and their needs more.

What's more important is that I came to know so many talented and capable classmates and saw a bigger world through their perspectives. This experience has driven me to be curious about the world that is in constant change.

I believe that big data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and blockchain technologies may fundamentally change the business model of the entire financial industry in the future, creating opportunities that are currently unimaginable. In the context of "vigorous development of financial technology" in China, there are no traditional financial practitioners that can avoid learning new skills to keep thriving. Those who can survive from the ups and downs are those who take the initiative to embrace changes.

I will travel and work out in my free time, and I also enjoy reading books on history, investment and economics. My latest travel plan is to go bungee jumping in Macau and read What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit written by Stephen A. Schwarzman.
